CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Scotty went back to the department after meeting with Sarah and Obsidian. She decided to spend the afternoon going over The Tool Shed’s surveillance footage. She was dreading it because she already knew it would be all for nothing. The cameras were only trained on the building’s back lot, so unless the crooks abandoned their car and escaped by crawling over alley fences and commercial dumpsters, she was in for a tedious afternoon.

It was almost worse than she expected. After three hours of footage, she still saw nothing but The Tool Shed’s back lot. She took the footage home on a thumb drive and decided to finish looking at it at home where she could at least get comfortable.

Sylvia was at home, so Scotty invited her to watch the surveillance footage with her. Sylvia was excited to help and had a lot of questions about Scotty’s trip to The Tool Shed and whether she thought Greta or any of her drag-queen friends were involved. Scotty told Sylvia she had gotten a strange vibe and about the three men who interrupted her interview and how Greta nervously shooed them away. Sylvia, too, was suspicious and began thinking of how that could possibly be explained.

They settled in with Scotty’s laptop and let the video roll. They occasionally visited or got up to make something to eat or to go to the bathroom, each one standing “watch” over the video while the other was occupied. After a couple more hours, Scotty had almost as much as she could take.

“We might have to turn this off and I can just finish it tomorrow at work. My contacts feel plastered to my eyes. They hurt so bad.”

“I can keep watching for you if that would help.”

“I would feel bad letting you do my work for me. And I’d probably get in trouble if anyone found out. It’s ok. We can just shut it off for now.”

Just then, Genevieve jumped up onto the keyboard of Scotty’s laptop. She tried to shove her off, but Genevieve persisted and jumped up on it again. Just as Scotty was about to shoo her away, she saw motion on the video screen.

“Wait. Stop,” Scotty said.

“What?” Sylvia asked.

Scotty picked up Genevieve off the keyboard as she backed up the footage. She hit the play button and as they watched, a dark car pulled onto the screen. Three men emerged. They went around to the back of the car and started unloading large bags from the trunk. They left them on the ground as they exited the scene. A minute later, they re-emerged and began loading the bags back into the trunk. They got back into the car and left.

“I was there when that happened,” Scotty said. “Those were the men that came in to see Greta while I was there, and he told them to leave. Goddammit! They were out back unloading that stuff right before they came inside! Did you see that?” Scotty said to Sylvia.

“I agree it looks very suspicious.
